Haider Ali of Pakistan made history by being the first Pakistani athlete to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games. Haider made history by winning the Men's Discus Throw Competition at the current Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Haider's personal best throw of 55.26m was almost three meters farther than the second-placed athlete, Mykola Zhabnyak of Ukraine. Joao Victor Teixeira of Brazil finished third in the competition with a throw of 51.86m.

Haider said:

This Gold will be very important for Para sport in my country. They will see what can be achieved through hard work and to be able to compete internationally for Pakistan,

Haider also said,

I hope to be a role model for other people that have a disability that don't compete in sport to take part in Para sport.

Haider has cerebral palsy, a disease that impairs a person's ability to walk as well as maintain balance and posture. In the F37 division, all athletes with cerebral palsy participate.

Pakistani Gold Medalist had earlier earned a silver medal in the Discus Throw category at the World Para-Athletics Championship in Dubai in 2019.

Haider has previously participated in the Paralympic Games in the long jump. In 2008, he received a silver medal, and in 2016, he received a bronze medal.

Because the other Pakistani competitor, Anila Izzat Baig, had already been disqualified from the competition, Pakistan's hopes for a Gold Medal were placed on Haider.
