Crayta, a game platform similar to Roblox, has been acquired by Facebook. Facebook has made many one-off acquisitions of virtual reality studios in recent months, but today the firm revealed that they are purchasing a game production platform akin to Roblox, which they hope will help them expand their reach.
Facebook announced that they are purchasing Unit 2 Games, which is developing a platform known as Crayta.
The Unreal Engine is used as a foundation, and it provides users with a more straightforward authoring interface and discovery and community capabilities.
It is similar to some other platforms available. Crayta has carved out a unique niche by promoting revenue methods such as Battle Pass seasons, which has given the site a more Fortnite-like feel.
Crayta's latest offering, Unit 2, has been in operation for only around three years, and it was recently unveiled in July of last year. Because the studio has a Google contract to debut its content on Stadia exclusively, it's safe to assume that most of its viewers are limited to this platform.
Stadia itself is also available on the Epic Games Store, so few additional viewers are on that platform.
Because of the compact nature of cloud-gaming platforms, the title appears to be tailored for them, with users able to link other users together to access games. Facebook is eager to leverage Crayta to further its gaming initiatives.
Crayta has harnessed the power of contemporary cloud-streaming technologies to make game creation more accessible and user-friendly.
We intend to integrate Crayta's development toolset into Facebook Gaming's cloud infrastructure to provide new experiences on Facebook as quickly as possible," Facebook Gaming Vice President Vivek Sharma stated in an announcement post.
The entire crew will be brought on board as part of the acquisition. However, the financial parameters of the transaction were not disclosed.
