Xiaomi made news in July when it overtook Samsung as the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer. According to a Canalys Research study, Xiaomi surpassed Apple to grab the second place on the list, and now another research group, IDC, has verified Xiaomi's rating.

Based on shipment quantities, market share, and year-over-year growth, IDC's study rates the top 5 smartphone firms in the world in the second quarter of 2021.

With over 59 million shipments, Samsung is the world's largest smartphone manufacturer, up 4 million over the same quarter in 2020. Despite shipping more units this year, the company's market share fell from 19.5 percent to 18.8 percent.

Xiaomi was close behind Samsung in second place, with 53.1 million handsets sold and a 16.9 percent market share. This was a significant rise above the 28.5 million units sold in the same quarter previous year. According to IDC, Xiaomi grew by 86.6 percent.

With 44.2 million smartphone shipments and a 14.1 percent market share, Apple is currently the third-largest phone manufacturer. The Cupertino behemoth's market share increased from 13.6 percent to 37.6 million sales last year.

Oppo and Vivo were fourth and fifth, with extremely similar figures. Oppo had 32.8 million overall shipments in the second quarter, while Vivo had 31.6 million shipments. During this time, both of their market shares increased.

According to IDC, the statistics listed above include all brands owned by a parent firm. For example, Xiaomi's statistics include Redmi and Poco's statistics.
