AMD and MediaTek may be seeking to collaborate once again, but for a different project. According to DigiTimes, the two chipmaker behemoths are contemplating forming a joint venture that would enable AMD to expand in the smartphone industry.
Due to this collaboration, MediaTek will be able to integrate its efficient CPU cores with AMD's RDNA2 graphics framework.
As a result, MediaTek processors will be able to handle ray tracing and variable-rate shading.
Samsung is already working on this for its next Exynos chipset generation, but it is unknown when those chips will be available.
This collaboration would also aid in the development of more specialized SoC solutions for smartphones, such as enhanced 5G connection, WiFi resources, and connectivity for high-speed data transfer modems.
AMD and MediaTek have previously collaborated, but only on AMD's WiFi network mode processor, the RZ608.
According to some sources, this chip was a rebranded Mediatek MT7921K. These were seen in the first few computers with built-in WiFi.
If the story about the two firms collaborating is accurate, AMD's rise in MediaTek's entry-level marketspace will most likely be extended.
However, neither company has acknowledged any joint venture, so we suggest treating this information with a grain of salt.
