Compaq was formerly one of the top three laptop brands globally in 2002 and even competed with IBM in the 1990s. Years later, however, the trademark became obsolete and was abandoned by HP, and it was never seen again in the market.
Compaq seems to be on the verge of being revived, as the brand has hinted at a return on Twitter. The tweet was posted by ComaqReboot, a freshly established account with just two tweets so far. According to the most recent tweet, the brand will return in the first quarter of 2022.
It is unknown if HP has repurchased the brand. However, a separate business, Grupo Newsan, purchased the brand licence in 2015 but abandoned it a few years later. The above-mentioned Twitter account is from Anaheim, California, which is home to several IT firms. So there's a debate over who owns the brand this time.
Compaq used to manufacture low-cost laptop computers, but it's unclear if that will continue in 2022. The brand will face tough competition from a slew of new competitors, including Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor, Realme, and others. Other manufacturers, such as Acer, Lenovo, and Asus, have also substantially improved their offerings.
Take this with a grain of salt since another long-dead GPU manufacturer, 3dfx hinted about a return a few days ago. It turned out to be a phoney account seeking publicity. It's fair to presume that this is a bogus account until we receive an actual announcement from the company rather than a cryptic tweet like this.
