Without GPS, self-driving systems are easily lost. Now, a new Caltech algorithm enables autopilot autos to detect where they are by just gazing at the terrain surrounding them – and the technology is working for the first time regardless of seasonal modifications in this terrain.
Research design and methodology were published in the Science Robotics Journal on 23 June.
The general process known as visual field navigation (VTRN) began in the 1960s.
Autonomous systems can be found by comparing adjacent landscapes with high-resolution satellite pictures.
The issue is that the present iteration of VTRN requires the landscape it is looking at to closely resemble the photos in its database for it to work. Anything that modifies or darkens the field, like covering snow or decaying leaves, will not bring the images to be inline and foul the system. As a result, VTRN systems can rapidly become confused unless a database of landscape photographs under all imaginable conditions exists.
To address the difficulty, a team of Soon-Jo Chung Laboratories, Bren Professor of Aerospace Control and Dynamic Systems, and JPL Research Scientist, managed by Caltech for NASA, have devoted their efforts to deep education and artificial intelligence (AI).

The AI searches for image patterns by teasing information and features that people will probably miss it.
Next, weather change technology will be taken into account: fog, rain, snow, etc. If they are successful, their research could aid in the development of navigation systems for self-driving cars.
