With a desire to provide customers a fully bezel-less display on their smartphones, OEMs are now pushing their limitations to put a selfie camera beneath the display screen. Oppo initially demonstrated its first-generation under-display camera for smartphones in 2019. The business has now revealed (through Weibo) their second-generation under-display camera technology.

The display utilized in this technology was created in collaboration with BOE, one of China's largest display providers. To achieve 400 PPI, this display employs a unique pixel architecture that compresses all pixels above the front camera lens. Oppo also utilized a translucent wire material to let more light in.

Traditionally, a single-pixel circuit drives two pixels on display, but Oppo has created a novel approach in which each circuit drives only one pixel. This is combined with "precise algorithmic compensation technology" to enhance the display's brightness above the camera lens. This will allows you to view tiny fonts on the screen more clearly than previously.

Oppo has also implemented numerous AI techniques to decrease display diffraction. The AI model was trained on tens of thousands of pictures to control image blur and glare issues.

Unfortunately, Oppo has not said when the technology would be available in commercial devices, which is a bit surprising given that ZTE has recently offered two handsets with a UD camera.
