WhatsApp's photo and video vanishing functionality is finally being rolled out. If the functionality is enabled, you will be able to see images and videos only once after opening it, exactly like Snapchat.
Disappearing media was first tested in June and is now available as a stable upgrade.

According to Facebook's blog article on WhatsApp's new update:
For example, you might send a View Once a photo of some new clothes you’re trying on at a store, a quick reaction to a moment in time, or something sensitive like a Wi-Fi password.
This not only enhances the privacy of your WhatsApp chats but also spares you from having to store everything on your camera roll. The functionality may be seen in action in the video below.
WhatsApp explains that, like all other messages sent through the app, vanishing messages will be secured by “end-to-end encryption”, which means WhatsApp will not be able to read them. Messages will also be clearly labeled with a "one-time" symbol.
To minimize misunderstanding, after the message has been viewed, it will display as "opened." Keep in mind, though, that receivers may still capture or screen record your vanishing messages, and WhatsApp, unlike Snapchat, will not tell the sender about it.
